If you are curious about bees and beekeeping, now is a great time to start The Bee Course.

We will be offering this in depth program in cooperation with NYC Parks Dept for the 4th year in 2011-2012.

The first sessions give you foundations in bee biology and behavior and will help you determine whether you'll be ready to keep bees on your own this Spring, would prefer to join a community team, or just want to learn and volunteer with us. In spring as weather permits, we progress to hands-on sessions in our urban apiaries, exposing students to dozens of hives at various stages of growth.

The Course is offered free of charge.

Mostly, it was very informative, fun, and clearly presented. I enjoyed it very much, EXCEPT... The presenter made a comparison of the queen bee's tail to 'J-Lo's butt', and said: 'Who would want a butt THAT big?' This is not funny: it's extremely offensive! Comparing the behind of a woman to the tail of an animal, especially in such a negative comment, is misogynistic. And just because HE doesn't like J-Lo's butt, doesn't mean others agree! On the contrary: her beautiful figure is part of what makes her attractive to many men, and admired and envied by many women! Jim, most of your jokes are charming, but that one can be deleted from the presentation. Without that joke, I would give it 5 stars!

Lianne and Jim did a super job hosting this kick-off meeting for the curious masses. I will definitely be attending the follow-up sessions in 2012 and look forward to getting my hands into those hives!

Looking forward to the full course.

It was a very comprehensive introduction that mixed facts with humor. I was not bored.

This was a reasonable intro to the field of Bee Keeping. The class itself seemed to start basic, which is great and progressed only slightly. This again is quite good as covering basics is needed. There are many different ways of bee keeping and from what I saw in the intro course, it appears this focuses soley on the instructors methods and will likely not discuss other methods FYI.

It's obvious that Liane and Jim are passionate about what they do and providing this knowledge to others. I am looking forward to the classes beginning in January!
