Bee Rescue Hotline: 917-740-4BEE
It is swarm season, when bee colonies naturally reproduce. Though we teach how to minimize swarming, there are no guarantees, and they may need to be collected. A swarm left undisturbed is typically calm as it awaits scouts bringing information about possible new homes.
If you see a swarm that needs a home, we can help. Please call 917-740-4BEE (4233), tell us when & where, and leave contact info for followup. Please be as specific as you can & if possible send a photo to nycbeekeeping@gmail.com. A beekeeper will survey the situation and call in support if needed.
Upcoming:
RSVPs Just Opened for June 25th: Kim Flottum, Editor of Bee Culture will be our speaker at this summer gathering - Seating is limited. To get on the invitee list or help plan, please visit the event page here.
Participate, Initiate & Social Media: Hands-on activities in the field are often scheduled on short notice - It's a good idea to watch email & the calendar (scroll down or login) for announcements, surveys, and opportunities to contribute. Please email if you want to host a hivecheck or other activity.
We're also now on Twitter @NYCbeekeeping and Facebook.
"THE BEE COURSE: For Bee Lovers & BeeKeepers"
We've completed the Winter lectures and transitioned to volunteer work in the field. A schedule of group mentoring sessions will be up shortly.
Registration will get you on the list of people who want to attend hands-on learning activities during the season.
A little more about The Bee Course:
If you are curious about bees and beekeeping, and want a thorough foundation, this program is for you. Lectures in our Free in-depth Winter Course, start in late fall. The first sessions give you fundamentals of bee biology and behavior and will help you determine whether you'll be ready to keep bees on your own by Spring, would prefer to join a community team, or just want to learn and volunteer with us. In Spring as weather permits, we progress to hands-on sessions in urban apiaries, exposing students to dozens of hives at various stages of growth. There is a lot of material on the web about beekeeping. Many different methods are covered in the Course, and our focus is on practices consistent with "Responsible Urban Beekeeping."
"The Bee Course" is comparable to a college course. It is offered free of charge as a matter of principle.
Students can participate in an at-cost group purchase of gear and bees we organize each spring. We have a limited allocation of package bees and preference goes to students and active volunteers. Our bee delivery date is in mid-April. If you are not currently enrolled in the Course, please login & click "Contact Us" if you would like to be included or to lend a hand organizing.
We will try to match you with a beekeeper seeking a site. Please click here for an inquiry form.
Charities we recommend

Each year we select one or more 501(c)(3) charitable organizations to refer for tax-deductible contributions. Please watch this space for this year's selections.

NYC Beekeeping is an all-volunteer group for beekeepers and beelovers.
We organize a free course in beekeeping, expert and peer mentoring, and community service & outreach activities throughout the year. Members volunteer with urban farms, community gardens, the NYC Parks Dept., schools and other organizations to foster a strong community of responsible urban beekeepers, to bring training & economic opportunity through beekeeping to underserved areas, to conserve and protect honeybees and other pollinators, and to contribute to the program and fundraising capacities of selected 501(c)(3) organizations.
